Cyclic oligofurans: one-pot synthesis of 30 pi and 40 pi expanded porphyrinoids

Title: Cyclic oligofurans: one-pot synthesis of 30 pi and 40 pi expanded porphyrinoids
Authors: Reddy, J S; Mandal, S; Anand, V G
Abstract: Acid-catalyzed condensation of furan and pentafluorobenzaldehyde yielded conjugated macrocycles with six and eight furan rings. They represent systems similar to annulenes with 30 d and 40 d electrons. From their structural analyses, it was found that furan rings in both the molecules were inverted in an alternative fashion and displayed nontwisted conformations.

Ion Imprinted Polymer based Ion-selective Electrode for the Trace Determination of Dysprosium(III) Ions

Title: Ion Imprinted Polymer based Ion-selective Electrode for the Trace Determination of Dysprosium(III) Ions
Authors: Prasad, K; Kala, R; Prasada Rao, T; Naidu, G R K
Abstract: Ion-selective electrode (ISE) was designed by dispersing the dysprosium(III) IIP particles in 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether plasticizer and then embedded in polyvinyl chloride matrix. The ISE shows a Nernstian response for dysprosium(III) over a wide concentration range (8.0 × 10−6 to 1.0 × 10−1 M) with a slope of 21.7 mV per decade. The limit of detection was 2 × 10−6 M. This sensor has a very fast response time (∼10 s) and offers high selectivity compared to conventional chemical sensors towards dysprosium(III) with respect to several alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions as the selectivity is 10–100-fold better. The sensor was used for determination of dysprosium(III) ions by potentiometric (EDTA) titration and has been successfully demonstrated for the determination of fluoride in mouth wash solution.

Elastic Properties of Ca5-xAxNb2TiO12 (A = Mg, Zn) Microwave Ceramics

Title: Elastic Properties of Ca5-xAxNb2TiO12 (A = Mg, Zn) Microwave Ceramics
Authors: Vimala George; Philip, J; Bijumon, P V; Sebastian, M T
Abstract: Microwave dielectrics in Ca5−xAxNb2TiO12 (A = Mg, Zn) system have been prepared for different values of x by conventional solid-state ceramic route. The elastic properties of the ceramics were investigated as a function of composition by ultrasonic techniques. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the ceramics form phase pure compounds for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 and form mixture phases beyond x = 1. The elastic properties were strongly affected by structural transformations. Magnesium-based compositions have better elastic properties compared with zinc-based system.
