Abstract: This studydescribeshow Achromobacterdenitrificans strainSP1,anovelisolatefromheavilyplastics- contaminated sewagesludgeefficiently consumedthehazardousplasticizer,di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) ascarbonsourcesupplementedinasimplebasalsaltmedium(BSM).Responsesurfacemeth- odology wasemployedforthestatisticaloptimizationoftheprocessparameterssuchastemperature (32 °C), agitation(200rpm),DEHPconcentration(10mM),time(72h)andpH(8.0).Attheseoptimized conditions, experimentallyobservedDEHPdegradationwas63%,whilethepredictedvaluewas59.2%; and thecorrelationcoefficient betweenthemwas0.998, i.e., highlysignificant and fit tothepredicted model. EmployingGC–MS analysis,thedegradationpathwaywaspartiallydeducedwithintermediates such asmono(2-ethylhexyl)phthalateand2-ethylhexanol.Briefly,this first reportdescribes A.deni- trificans strainSP1asahighlyefficient bacteriumforcompletelyremediatingthehazardousDEHP (10mM)in96hinBSM(50%consumedin60h),whichoffersgreatpotentialsforefficiently cleaningthe DEHP-contaminatedenvironmentssuchassoil,sedimentsandwateruponitsdeployment
