In this work, a 2D coordination polymer, [Co2(μ-HCOO)2(NC)2(HIPA)]⋅2H2O)n (CP1) has been reported as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of organic hazardous dyes methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) from the aqueous phase. The structure of CP1 was extensively established by diffraction (single crystal-XRD and powder-XRD), thermal (TGA), and spectroscopic (FTIR) techniques. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of CP1 reveal the surface topography. The specific surface area, porosity, and pore distribution analysis were achieved by using a BET analyzer. The topological study of CP1 shows the hcb type of underlying net topology. CP1 exhibits appreciable adsorption efficiency towards MB dye at neutral pH and room temperature. Moreover, the presence of an intricate array of non-covalent interactions such as π-π and hydrogen-bonding plays a pivotal role in the adsorption of both the dyes over CP1. Kinetic studies of adsorption suggest the pseudo-second-order reaction. The adsorption efficiency of CP1 was also compared with two natural adsorbents (sawdust and rice husk) which show CP1 as a superior adsorbent for MB and MO dyes adsorption from the aqueous phase.en_US
