During a taxonomic study in describing a novel species of the genus Shewanella from a mangrove ecosystem, it was found that the type strain Shewanella irciniae was not available from the Japan Collection of Microorganisms (JCM) and the type strain received from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) culture collection and from the author who described this species were found to be members of the genus Brevibacillus based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Therefore, this species cannot be included in any further scientific studies. It is therefore proposed that the Judicial Commission of the International Committee of Systematics of Prokaryotes place the name Shewanella irciniae on the list of rejected names, if a suitable replacement for the type strain is not found or a neotype strain is not proposed within two years following the publication of this Request for an Opinion.en_US
