dc.description.abstract	Although engineering education at the tertiary level in India is now more than 150 years old, it was only since independence that the IITs have been set up as institutions of national importance with an emphasis on postgraduate education and research. In this communication, we benchmark the recent research performance of the IITs in academic research in the area of engineering science and technology in the country against that of similarly placed institutions in the world using bibliometric indicators from the Web of Science and Scopus databases.	en_US
